Dear Daniel,
I hope this finds you well and in good spirits which I am confident you are considering you just purchased the long awaited Elvis & Priscilla king size bed from their Hillcrest house. You have been trying for so many years to acquire the bed and now it’s finally yours so a big congratulations to you! How perfect for you to now own the bed especially since you own the copyrighted photo that everybody loves of Elvis holding baby Lisa Marie while they were on that bed.
Of course you know I used to own the bed and I purchased it through the Don B. Smith. Auction at the Hollywood Palladium back in the 80’s when the contents of Elvis’ Hillcrest home were sold. What an amazing event that was! I purchased many items from that auction including the bed & headboard, which were on display in my museums for many years. I sold the bed in 1994 at my auction hosted by Butterfield & Butterfield in Las Vegas.
Since you haven’t actually seen the bed in person yet, here’s a bit of description for you. It’s big. It’s heavy. The end. haha… The headboard is wood and quite ornate as it's carved with acanthus scrollwork and above that a similarly styled carved panel. It’s just incredible and runs the width of the king size mattress. Oh my gosh, I have to tell you about the mattress. It was made by Royal Rest ~ Royal Bedding Company, it’s king size as I mentioned and has a label attached at the foot of the mattress which reads: “Made Expressly For Elvis Presley”…AND…I have never in my life seen nor had nor moved a mattress that was so HEAVY! The mattress is extremely comfortable but I have no idea what’s it made of that makes it so heavy. Be prepared to have at least 6 strong men to move it for you. The two box springs are easy to move, no worries there. The green velvet bedspread is also very weighty and as all things made back then, it was well made and made to last. If my memory serves me correctly, Elvis owned the Hillcrest house from 1967-1973. It’s located in Beverly Hills, California and the address is 1174 Hillcrest Road in the Trousdale Estate. I’m sure you know this already but during the time frame of when Elvis owned/lived at the Hillcrest house he filmed the ’68 Comeback Special, That’s The Way It Is, Elvis On Tour and Aloha From Hawaii.
I’m including a photo for you of how the bed was set up at my auction, thought you might like to see it as it was displayed. Fun times, good memories.
(this is where the picture is inserted)
I will close for now and again, congratulations to you and I wish you well with your endeavor of growing your Elvis museum.
Stay well and God bless,
(Hand signed in ink) Jimmy Velvet
